Micro-Lettering for Finer Skills

Engravers may do some questionable things at times, perhaps just for the challenge or something new to try.

This 2007 U.S. penny has been gracefully script engraved with the name Airtact. This word was chosen by the engraver Sam Alfano because it was part of a demonstration he was giving using the Airtact hand control system.

When asked about the practicality of such micro-lettering, Sam said it was an excellent way for an engraver to develop and maintain fine graver control. In this case, not only are the cuts extremely small and fine, the workpiece is also soft which further challenges the engraver because there is very little resistance or “feedback” from the metal while engraving it.

Sam’s example on this coin is amazingly small, yet virtually flawless. How small? The lower case a measures 0.021" (0.53mm) tall. The entire word is 0.298” (7.6mm) long including the accent cut before the uppercase A.

Tools used: GRS GraverMach with Airtact control system. Monarch handpiece equipped with Palm Pad Element.
