Engrave a Gun in One Week: Part 1

Making and selling casts of your work can be quite commonplace if you've had your graver to the grindstone for a few years now. But for some, being able to create and own a three-dimensional plastic cast to study is a new concept.

An exciting new GRS class "Start-to-Finish Shotgun Engraving" with FEGA President Rex Pedersen began on Monday, July 28. A late afternoon lecture turned into a demo of how to use a mold-making kit and Alumilite to create a mold and a cast of an engraving. The simple process can allow for hours of productive study from a single cast piece. Instructor Rex Pedersen explained that having a three-dimensional casting can help anyone from beginner to professional learn how to engrave faster and better.

Although some students have experience making casts of their own work, others looked on with intrigue as Pedersen made casts of examples the class would actually use to study. These casts, along with countess handouts and hands-on practice, will aid these students in engraving an entire Stoeger shotgun during this class. Watch for a look at some of these finished firearms on Friday's Featured Photos.
