Engraving Glass: The Beginning of the Blues
There is a certain joy in creating your own piece of artwork completely from the canvas to the final application of the design. Having control over the size, shape, and material of your canvas allows a freedom that is satisfying for many artists.
This beautiful hand-crafted vase is a work-in-progress by Evan Markowitz, a student at Emporia State University. The piece is a tribute to the blues, showcasing a major historical musician as the focal point. The dark part of the engraving is not ink or paint . . . it is actually the second layer of glass showing through. Markowitz creates his glasswork with a method that allows his engravings to appear simply by removing a thin layer of glass.
As Markowitz works from a photo reference, he takes the glass engraving slowly. Too much speed or heat can damage his glass vase, so he utilizes his experience and the control of a custom GRS rotary handpiece setup.
