Adding Dimensional Style

There are many ways to take a flat, cold piece of metal and turn it into a beautiful and warm work of art. With all the different styles and techniques available, engravers have so many possibilities.

One style that is very popular among collectors, engravers, and other artists is sculpted engraving like the piece shown here. The background has been removed and stippled for a high contrast, which makes the sculpted area really pop out. The thick, bold scrolls and leaves give the sculpted look substance, while the execution shows smooth, flowing elements.

Combining bold form and smooth execution in this piece creates quite a harmonious feel. Though this technique can be daunting for less experienced engravers, Chris DeCamillis can help you learn. He will be teaching sculpting methods during his Advanced Engraving course in 2008 at the GRS Training Center. For more information on this course, visit the GRS Training Center website or call 1-800-835-3519 today to enroll.
