Apply Your Artistic Skills to Wood
As beautiful, three-dimensional sculpted engraving techniques on metal become ever more popular among engravers and collectors, a great way to hone those skills is to try another canvas.
This scene engraved by Bill Janney is a nice example of three-dimensional artwork. The varying depths he has used creates the illusion of a great expanse of space, all in a small area. Although the depth only changes by millimeters in places, his treatment gives the feeling of distant mountains and animals close enough to touch.
Consider creating a new design or transforming an old one into a three-dimensional piece. Try it first on metal, then on wood, and compare the results. Practicing on different canvases can allow your mind and your muscles to stretch and learn new ways of working. Expanding your engraving surface to new ones like wood can open you to new and profitable markets, or simply help you find a fun and relaxing hobby.
