Scrimshaw: Roses Are Red
Color brings a whole new level to the artistic work of scrimshanders.
With the addition of color, an artist not only has to compose a layout,
but the colors must be chosen and applied appropriately.
In this respect, scrimshanders become a wonderful blend of engraver
and painter. This rose by Sandra Brady would not be so vibrant with
life had Sandra used a traditional black ink. Imagine a scene with
a ship being thrashed by a tumultuous sea – it is "alive" by
its own chaotic nature. Compare a simple rose like this one depicted
without its signature red petals and long green stem. Sometimes color
can form the very essence of scrimshaw art, creating an emotional
connection for whoever sees it.
If you enjoy painting, drawing, or engraving, learning
the art of scrimshaw may take you to the next step in your career or hobby.
