Deep Dot Backgrounds
A punch dot background is an efficient and attractive way to add
texture, contrast, and sparkle to the metal. This silver loupe, engraved
by Chris DeCamillis, features a punch dot (beading tool) background
that is quite deep. And, punch dot backgrounds are relatively fast
and easy to complete because the tool is a standard beading/punch dot
tool.
Each dot on this loupe is almost an individual hemisphere, which
gives it a three-dimensional effect that is alive with movement. If
you look carefully to the sides of the graver cuts that outline the
leaf elements, notice how Chris left the dots spaces away enough from
one side of the square graver cut to give the illusion of relief. In
other words, the dot background appears slightly lower than the top
surface of the leaves, but it’s not.
Just remember to space each dot separately and use enough impact
power to form a good, deep rounded shape. However, avoid too much geometric
perfection in dot spacing because it can look too artificial in some
designs.
