Overlapping Stones, Part 2
A Featured Photo in May 2007 shows an unusual technique of overlapping
stones to create something visually and mechanically different from
most stone setting techniques. Here is another example in a finished
pendant.
Notice how the large center stone has no beads or metal to retain
it; only the overlapping of the adjacent stones keeps the center
stone fixed in place. This example also shows a very well executed
tapered setting technique running down each star point.
One of the secrets is how deep the metal has been removed by the
first few graver cuts. These cuts are so deep that the girdle of
each stone is visually above the metal around it, adding sparkle
and magnifying the size of the stone because the girdles are not
hidden by excess metal.
