Engraving Glass: Stone and Fossil Theme

Glass engraving, like a bulino scene in metal, can tell a story that is as beautiful as a painting yet refreshingly different in important ways. One freedom glass artists enjoy is creating original glass work and then engraving it. So, unlike other engravers, glass artists can have greater creative control of the work piece before the engraving begins. This example is by Emporia State University student Evan Markowitz.

Using his signature shape and form, Evan has designed a piece that is a complete work of art. As one examines the vase from top to bottom, it makes sense almost immediately. Grainy spots of dark blue, brown, and black mingle with soft waves of white, a visual texture that resembles layers of stone. These elements flow perfectly into the four engravings of a fossilized fish that enhance the top of the vase.

The theme used by Markowitz seems harmonious with rock itself, capturing an impression of its surroundings. Many times a unique canvas like this can provide an artistic way to show natural beauty. Whether you create your own pieces in metal, wood, or glass, experimenting with new themes and unity is a great way to express your personal style like Evan has.
