The First Day of Grand Masters
Week 1 of the twelve-day Grand Masters Program began on Monday, October
8th in Emporia, Kansas. Throughout the
day, students eagerly and intently listened
to 2007 Grand Masters Instructor Winston Churchill.
One of the first handouts students received from this Grand Master
covered "Thoughts for Class." The following four short paragraphs
show the uplifting advice that Winston chose to pass on.
- Of the people who will see your work, the most important one
to please is you, yourself, the creator, the artist; it should be an
expression of your own insights and tastes. Then, and only then, if
you are lucky (and they are lucky) it will also please others.
- There is a wonderful place in this world for education, for
exposure to the good and not so good. It will develop our sensitivities
and refine our tastes.
- Give yourself permission (and even encouragement) to enjoy
your work. If you find it to be imperfect, do not be surprised, we
will never be able to live perfectly or even to love perfectly, let
alone do perfect work. It is just our business to strive to do better,
to keep hiking up to higher ground.
- At the end of the day, look at your work and appreciate the
struggle that went into it. Enjoy your work, even love it, this is
the fuel that will give you strength for tomorrow.
