Much like cutting metal, wood engraving can be very challenging and rewarding. This jewelry box was engraved by professional woodcarver Bill Janney. Bill retired from General Motors as a professional trainer. His love of woodcarving and the desire to teach it led him to write the successful book Gunstock Carving, as well as create instructional videos on fish scale and basket weave pattern carving.

Bill’s work has been featured in various publications, including Woodcarving Illustrated and Power Carver. Most recently, the DIY Television Network featured Bill Janney in August 2007 for a 30-minute program where he showed off his carvings, tools, and one of his methods for applying a finish on a gunstock.

In his professional trainer position with G.M., Bill developed a successful understanding of how people learn new skills. He applies this experience in teaching woodcarving. This helps Bill’s students learn faster and adds greatly to their enjoyment of woodcarving. Bill’s methods are effective and easy to understand.
