A Hobby Beyond Most Hobbies
Rewarding, relaxing, alive with personal growth...these are what many people
seek in their hobby. Now, more of us are turning to the art of
engraving as a creative and fulfilling hobby. With innovative tools
and techniques now shared so freely, people around the world can
add this wonderful tradition to their life, even part time. Years
ago this was difficult or even impossible; today it's clearly achievable
even for those who aren't natural artists.
Charles Schreck is a perfect example. In 2001, a few years before he retired
from his job, he started engraving with a Basic Engraving course at the GRS Training
Center. Charlie said the most challenging part for him at first was probably "Scrolls...they
drove me nuts". Charlie said he was even dreaming about scrolls at night.
Although he has never considered himself artistic, he began to practice when
he could to improve his designs. Six years later, Charles has completed five
courses with GRS including
Design & Layout taught by Lee Griffiths
and
Scrolls & Design by Ron Smith.
The Parker double gun shown here is the latest personal project engraved by hobbyist
Charles Schreck. Charlie says sometimes he just stares at it with pride because
in some ways he can’t believe he did it. And considering Charlie started
in 2001 part-time, it’s truly remarkable. Now retired, Charlie’s
engraving is his favorite hobby. He loves creating beautiful pieces for himself
and his family. To get started engraving like Charlie, call 1-800-835-3519
