Engraving Loves More than Metal
A beautiful metal surface comes to mind when many people think engraving.
But for a Fine Arts senior at Emporia State University, glass is his
workpiece. Twenty-three year old artist Evan Markowitz first fell in love
with glass blowing in high school, and decided glass would be his lifelong
passion. Now, Evan has been adding to his creativity in glass by engraving
it.
Evan has used a traditional copper wheel lathe in the past to create designs
on his pieces, but he is now experimenting with a custom GRS rotary
handpiece setup. Compared to a lathe, Evan said this handpiece allows for
more control, more delicacy, and more freedom. His work relies heavily on
clean form, influenced by the craftsmanship seen in his grandfather's custom
woodwork. Evan also feels he is inspired by European cut glass.
This glass vase, blown and engraved by Evan, is a project he has been
working on this summer. He said it's important to go slow and concentrate on
fine control to avoid mistakes that he believes can happen faster engraving
glass than metal.
No matter what surfaces interest you, GRS can likely help you engrave it.
