The Opportunity of a Lifetime
People start engraving at different times
in life and for a variety of
reasons. Sometimes it is to begin a new
hobby, make a career change, or
quite by accident. Ashton Ludden, a twenty-one
year old college student
working toward her BFA at Emporia State
University, happened to be at the right
university at the right time.
Originally an Art Therapy major, Ludden
found a passion for engraving
when she decided to take a Beginning
Engraving course as an elective through
the Engraving Arts program at ESU. In
June 2007, Ashton sought out a summer
internship with Glendo Corporation where
she learned about the engraving
world and gained practical experience.
One of her projects, shown here,
was to transform two tattoos into a single
engraving. With only six months
experience, Ashton did exceptionally
well.
Ashton said the most challenging part
so far was creating and executing
a finished project for someone other
than herself. She has learned the importance
of craftsmanship, and
her work shows it. When asked about her
future as an engraving artist,
Ludden said, "I don't know what's ahead,
but I know it's good." Passionate,
optimistic young adults like Ashton Ludden
are the driving force behind
renewing the art in today's modern world.
