Engraved Microblock: A High Relief Work-in-Progess
Robert L. “Bob” Finlay loves to do deep, sculpted engraving,
and he is a natural at it. One of his latest projects is this GRS Microblock
model made especially to be engraved.
The top of the jaws features a horse and rider that is about 1.35" tall.
The parting jaw seam virtually disappears when the jaws are closed.
The background has been relieved to an extraordinary depth — as
much as .062" (1.6mm). This gives the figures amazing depth and
dimension. On the side of one jaw, Bob has started a branding scene
with several figures in relief. He intends to do the other jaw and
the top and sides of the block crown as well.
The original GRS Microblock was designed as a precision everyday
work vise for stone setters and jewelers. The ball diameter is 3.15" (80mm);
the jaws are .87" (22mm) high and about 1.6" (40mm) across
at the top. The standard Microblock has numerous holes in the jaw tops
for work holding pins and accessories. This particular Microblock version
is made without holes so engravers can do what they want on the tops
of the jaws. Both versions are machined from solid 416 alloy stainless
steel.
This wonderful engraving project will be shown in various stages,
so be sure to visit the GRS Featured Photos in the future.
