Partner with Another Artist (Part 2)
Featured Photos #15-1 shown in April
2007 presented the opportunity and the
challenge of engraving a client’s
dog with the help of another artist
to help translate a photographic image
into a more engravable drawing.
Since many
developing engraving artists enjoy seeing a work-in-process, this Featured Photos shows the pendant about half-way complete. This 14 karat gold pendant
is 22mm (0.87”) in diameter. The image clearly shows remarkable detail and an
accurate likeness to both the drawing and the photograph.
In case you are wondering who the engraver is, it’s Christian DeCamillis who is
widely known for this type of bulino work. Chris used a GraverMach with Monarch
handpiece for the deeper lines and hand gravers for the finer ones. His graver
is an 80 degree (less than square) “square” graver with the bottom ground to
provide hand lift; the graver has no heel which is how Chris was taught bulino in Italy.
Watch for the finished piece coming soon, and stay tuned for Part 3.
