James B. Meek’s “Positioning Vise”
James “Bruce” Meek, author of the book The Art of Engraving, made
many of his own tools, including engraving vises. This was his last design and has a special
feature for microscope work.
Keeping the work centered in the relatively small field of view of a microscope is important
for an engraver. Bruce designed and built a special vise-in-a-vise which allowed him to
reposition the work and keep it reasonably close to the rotational center of the main vise.
This improved things immensely compared to using a typical engraving vise under a microscope.
The craftsmanship is superb which should surprise no one.
In case you are wondering, Bruce gave this to Don A. Glaser, a good friend and admirer. Now,
it is on display in the GRS Training Center for all to see and enjoy. Perhaps Bruce knew and
trusted that Don would share it with others.
