Unity in Repetition
The engraving design you see here is elegant, clearly complements the knife's design,
and is gracefully simple. At times, some engravers over complicate their design
which may detract from the harmony of the finished piece.
The man who engraved this fine knife, Steve
Dunn, became a Master Bladesmith well before
he learned to engrave. Because Steve is deeply
involved in both the design of custom knives
and engraving, he works hard to insure each
element is in harmony with the design.
In this
example, Steve used a stylized leaf as a
main part of his engraving design and repeated
it for an interesting and balanced effect.
It works nicely and lets the eye see the
finished piece as a whole before zooming in to fine details. The maker
of this knife, Harvey Dean of Rockdale, Texas, is a friend of Mr. Dunn’s
and a fellow ABS Master Bladesmith.
If you like Steve’s approach to engraving, consider enrolling in one
of the engraving courses he teaches in the
GRS Training Center. Steve’s
courses sell out almost immediately, so plan
well ahead to secure your own seat.
To see more knives like this, Art and Design
in Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives (#022-954) contains an excellent collection of beautiful knives.
