Scrimshaw: A Special Form of Engraving
A type of folk art dating back centuries, scrimshaw is a unique form of engraving.
Traditionally, scrimshaw work was colored using only black or dark ink, but now some
scrimshanders use an array of color which opens this classic art to more creative possibilities.
Scrimshander Sandra Brady did this stunning lioness and set it in a sterling silver pendant.
Her use of color makes this piece a vibrant creation similar to a watercolor painting except the
ink fills the scrim lines and dots that are scratched or cut into the surface.
You can get your own start in this enjoyable and rewarding art by enrolling in Sandra
Brady's Basic Scrimshaw course in September 2007. Call 1-800-835-3519 today to enroll
and do something new and wonderful with your hands.
