Purposely Overlapped Stones
Jewelers and stone setters refer to closely
spaced stones as being set
“girdle to girdle.” In theory, stones can’t be set any closer than
when their girdles are actually touching.
But, that’s if the girdles
are at the same height.
As something different and visually interesting,
Alexandre Sidorov, a world-class setter
and teacher from Antwerp, Belgium, shows
how setting stones at different levels
can allow the girdles to visually overlap.
This creates a delicate and beautiful
effect that is not immediately apparent
until you realize just what is involved.
In this example, the emerald is purposely
set deeper to allow the diamond girdles
to overlap the emerald girdle, breaking
up the circular border of the emerald
and creating an interesting effect.
Tools used: GRS GraverMax SC with Monarch handpiece, GRS MicroBlock vise, and Flex-shaft
system for drilling and bur work.
