5 Cent Mascot
Coin carving, especially the American Nickel used in the folk art called Hobo Nickels, is fascinating and ever-changing. Kansas engraver and carver Robert “Bob” Finlay does this so naturally, it’s amazing.

Anyone who sees Bob’s nickels will immediately agree that he is driven to uniqueness in his carving. When the work piece is only about 0.8" (20mm) in diameter, a carver is often looking for ideas that will work. Bob got this one from the local high school mascot, the Spartans.

With Mr. Finlay’s experience in gun and knife engraving, gold inlay and overlay is no problem for him. This crisp carving accented with just the right gold emphasis is truly eye catching. Bob says it’s one of his nickels that really pleased him at completion.

So far, he’s decided to keep it himself, although many have asked to buy it. He hasn’t put a price on it, but you can bet it’s more than a nickel’s worth.
