Machinist Enjoys Metal Engraving Hobby
David Drake is a machinist with a special connection to the world of engraving.
During the week, he programs and operates one of Glendo’s most sophisticated machines,
an integrated multi-axis turning/milling center that produces GRS handpiece parts and a
lot more. Dave went to work at Glendo with no interest in metal engraving whatsoever,
but that’s changed.
His work mates realized Dave was serious about engraving when he used a week of vacation
to enroll in a GRS Engraving Course in September 2005. Since then, he has taken a second GRS Course,
bought his own engraving equipment, and completed many projects. Like many hobby engravers,
Dave has engraved more things for friends and family than for himself.
Dave can get a little ornery at work, like wearing Denver Broncos merchandise in the Glendo shop,
located right in the middle of Kansas City Chiefs territory. But he really is a Broncos fan
(nobody’s perfect) and creatively expressed it in one of his engraving projects he did just
for himself, a 28-gauge Stoeger Highlander side-by-side shotgun that he first bought just to shoot.
This is one of Dave’s field guns, so you might see some dents and scratches. Don’t you think
most gun enthusiasts would enjoy something like this that is truly an expression of themself? Well done, Dave!
