With such a rich culture, New Zealander and hand engraving artist Andrew Biggs is a highly creative individual. This bracelet, shown in both flat and bent form, is a wonderful example of sculpted, three-dimensional engraving.

The bracelet features "Tane", a mythical god from the New Zealand history. Here is Andrew's inspiration for the design: "The great God Tane separated Rangi and Papa who became the sky father and earth mother and by doing so brought light into the world. Tane then created the forest and all the animal and bird life in it so he is the God that a prayer (karakia) of thanks is made to before a tree is felled. Thereafter the life force of Tane resides within the timber after it has been crafted into other treasures (taonga)."

Biggs depicts the Lord of the Forest with a well-executed design and his own style elements, which include bird-head scrolls. Tane's countenance is abstracted and close-eyed in the center of the design, above weaving stems and leaves of the "forest". Andrew engraved this sterling silver bracelet for his daughter Rebecca.
