The art of engraving, though once a skill that took years to learn and execute the basics, is more accessible than ever. With a basic engraving class and the right tools, this wonderful field can be applied to many projects.

Engraving is most often seen on firearms, knives, and jewelry in the capacity of scrolls and scenes. However, custom lettering is another part of hand engraving that can not only be satisfying, but profitable as well.

Here is a custom hand-strung necklace by a hobbyist who recently began adding a personal touch to jewelry. The initials are engraved on small copper pendants with the letters J, P, S, and M. Each initial is for a member of the client's family. The letters may not be perfect; but for a one-of-a-kind piece like this, any imperfection in the engraving can add to the handmade quality that says this is not machine engraved.

If you like to string beads as a hobby or even professionally, hand engraving can add a personal touch for a custom look. The initials on the copper pendants were cut using a polished flat graver. The heart on the center pendant was cut using a 120° C-Max graver (#022-619) with a polished parallel heel and a GRS GraverMach with Airtact control (#004-965).

Handmade jewelry, whether it is simple hand-strung beads or complex beading or metalwork, can become a higher value craft with hand engraving.
