Creatively Shaped Scrimshaw

Traditional scrimshaw work on bone does not always create a feeling of unity through design. Here, Sandra Brady has wholly designed a set of scrimshaw pieces that are unified.

With a motif using animals native to Africa, these pieces show how to completely design a work. Although these animals would look just as nice on circles, ovals, or squares, Brady has utilized the shape of the native land as a canvas for each animal. This decision reinforces the idea of the African creatures in an abstract visual way, implying perhaps that these are wild creatures — not the zoo-variety one might see in a city attraction.
