Wood allows many freedoms for engravers and carvers. Since wood is available in so many colors, the artist has an open palette. Wood also carries such a mood to any subject that it can be swayed from comfortable to regal.

This small piece by wood carver and engraver Bill Janney is a sample of how to create a beautiful flowing scroll in wood. Wood carvers and engravers employ a variety of scrolls to add interest to a scene. But when taken away from its background, the scroll and it's natural beauty are easier to appreciate. Scrolls like this are widely used in architecture, home furnishings, engravings, fabrics, and more.

Because scrolls are so universal, learning and understanding how to create a great scroll is an important lesson for any artist.
