This is an example of traditional black ink on ivory scrimshaw work by engraver and scrimshander James Mitchell.

Completed in 1993, this work James created with all dot work, as opposed to scratch work. The piece is a slab cut from a 32 pound tusk, measuring about 4" x 4.5".

Mitchell used his bulino handpiece to engrave this neat piece of artwork. At the time he had done some pointilistic work (using only dots), but had always used it together with "scratch" work. Look for more work from James Mitchell in the future, including a piece with metal engraving and scrimshaw.
