Glendo/GRS Tools employee Shane Garriott travels around the world helping GRS Tools dealers at trade shows. Over the past few years, Shane has developed a strong interest in stone setting — in fact, he really enjoys it.

After doing the same demos time after time, Shane decided to get creative. This blank half-hard brass ring is mainly used to demonstrate ring engraving. But Shane decided to add some sparkle and contrast by adding 1.5 mm black and white CZs to create a nice pattern. He laid out the design, drilled the holes, used setting burs to create proper seats and then did a nice job of bead and bright cut work to finish the setting job. This type of setting is often called pavé because it uses small stones set very close together to cover (or pave) an area with stones.

Shane set this particular ring during the 2008 Hong Kong Jewellery Show in front of a live audience. Perhaps one of the most amazing things is that Shane has never been a jeweler or stone setter. In fact, he has never been paid to set a single stone. But, he's paid close attention to the lessons taught by GRS instructors who have helped and encouraged him in his pursuit of stone setting.

You can learn this type of setting at the GRS Training Center. Or, for some quick demonstrations, visit with Shane at any of the shows he attends.
