It's Rich, Not Fancy

One of the great things about engraving is the custom look that can be created for a client, loved one, or friend. Unlike store-bought or mass-produced cast "engravings" on jewelry and the like, a hand engraver can create something that is one of a kind and meaningful.

"This bracelet is nothing fancy, because my friend Rich is not very fancy," said machinist David Drake. While working with his friend Rich, Drake noticed that he wore a plain copper bracelet. After a conversation about personalizing the piece of jewelry, Rich said he didn't want anything too fancy, just a nice simple bracelet.

Drake, who had seen some of Ron Smith's flare cut technique featured here, was inspired by the creative work and had played around with the style a little. He had dabbled in bright cuts as well, and decided to make this design using a flat graver. David used a 60° face with a 15° heel and put a couple hours into personalizing this piece.

"It was more of a challenge than I thought it would be," Drake mentioned, saying this was his first finished piece that would actually be worn where he used this style. Experimenting with different techniques and styles can be fun and lead to innovation, even if it's only in your spare time. Try your hand at something new and see what you can create — even if it's a simple, custom bracelet for a friend.
