A "Loony" Engraving
work by Jake Newell

This beautiful bulino work was done by 21-year-old Jake Newell, an Emporia State University student. With less than a year of experience, Jake is creating high-quality artwork and learning very quickly. He has only had two semesters of engraving courses at ESU and is working toward a degree in education.

This piece is more of a common scene throughout engraving themes than Newell's very personal engraving of Dakota (featured September 21, 2007). A single loon divides the still waters as it coasts along. What could be a small island or peninsula in the background brings balance to the design. A few clouds dot the sky, and a soft, rolling tree-line shapes the landscape beyond the shore.

This very simple composition makes for quite a classic scene that would look great on anything from a pendant to a rifle. It takes dedication and a passion for engraving to advance at any level.
