The late Erich Boessler, an accomplished hand engraver from Germany, engraved this firearm with an interesting combination of detail and dimension.
Instead of a straight bulino or dot engraving approach, Boessler gave this hand engraved gun a foundation of deep relief work. Where he could have provided much less detail in the characters, shading, and landscape by completely carving each element, Boessler made mini plateaus of metal with his graver.
Each steel plateau outlines objects in the design, such as the Native American and beautiful horse. Above the foundational relief work, he used fine dots and lines to convey each aspect of the engraving. These two techniques of carving and fine dot and line engraving are the perfect marriage for a striking design. It helps, of course, that Boessler was a world-class engraver who obviously had a great eye for layout and design.
